In 1982, Jim Ansara founded Shawmut with a handful of employees. The company specialized in building projects with complex and difficult conditions - the types of projects other general contractors didn’t want - completing them on fast-track schedules, and providing exceptional customer service. The market responded positively to Shawmut’s approach to the construction process, and the company quickly became one of New England’s most successful start-up companies. In 1989, Inc. magazine named Ansara Entrepreneur of the Year in the construction category.
Ansara served as Shawmut’s President/Chief Executive Officer for 18 years before assuming the position of Chairman and handing the company reins over to Tom Goemaat. Today, Goemaat serves as Shawmut’s CEO, while Bill Hughes serves as its President and Chief Operating Officer. Goemaat is focused on the development of Shawmut’s staff as well as the protection and proliferation of the company culture. Hughes leads the company’s smart growth plan, is responsible for the company’s operations, has implemented of a number of training and development initiatives, including “Shawmut University,” a company-wide curriculum and program and individual development plans for each employee.
As of November 2008, Shawmut is a $900 million company, employing 875 full-time employees (Shawmut.com). Over the last ten years, Shawmut’s revenues have grown 700%.
Shawmut is a 100% employee-owned company through the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Every year, shares of the company are distributed into each employee’s ESOP account which serves as a retirement savings vehicle for them.
